Management of Hematological Cancer in Older People

E-BookPDF1 - PDF WatermarkE-Book

Springer Londonerschienen am20.11.20142015
The risk of cancer increases with age, and the number of older adults seeking treatment is increasing dramatically in line with the aging population. The care of older patients differs from that of younger adults because of differences in the biology of the tumor, age-related differences in host physiology, co-morbidity burden and psychosocial issues, which might impact the efficacy and side effects of cancer therapy. This book focuses on the management of hematological cancer and provides guidance on the management issues specific to older patients, spanning background and epidemiology, special considerations in the management of older people, therapeutics and psychosocial considerations.

Riccardo A Audsio, MD, FRCS is Professor of Surgical Oncology at the University of Liverpool, and consultant at the Whiston Hospital, Prescot. His main research interest is exploring the role of surgery within the multidisciplinary management of cancer patients, particularly focusing on onco-geriatrics, and Dr Audisio currently sits on the editorial board of 12 publications.  He is the editor-in-chief of Surgical Oncology (Elsevier).

Ulrich Wedding, MD, PhD is consultant for Hematology, Oncology, Palliative Care, and Geriatric Medicine at the University Hospital in Jena, Germany. He is head of the department of palliative care. His clinical interests include cancer in the elderly, new drug development, supportive and palliative care. He has authored or coauthored numerous articles, book chapters, and monographs with a focus on aspects of cancer treatment in elderly patients. He is member of the editorial board of the Journal of Geriatric Oncology, and reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals. He is past-chairman and current secretary of the Task Force Cancer in the Elderly of the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (EORTC), board member of the International Society for Geriatric Oncology (SIOG), and chairman of the Arbeitsgruppe Geriatrische Onkologie of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Internistische Onkologie of the German Cancer Society.
