Last Chance For Love

Boruma Publishing, LLCerschienen am01.07.2018
Kayla Ferrell's life was destroyed when a tragic car crash claimed her beloved husband, her young son, and three years of her life. But her dead husband, Patrick, isn't ready to move on yet. He's determined to give Kayla another chance at life-and love.

With the help of her devoted nurse, Brigit, she travels to the exotic Fiji islands to watch her screenplay, Deadly Divergence, be made into an exciting silver-screen motion picture.

Hollywood superstar Alex Matthews may hold Kayla's heart, but a bitter divorce has left him emotionally scarred, unwilling to risk falling in love again. While Kayla struggles to regain the use of her legs, he struggles against his growing attraction to her.

Can Alex and Kayla find the strength to overcome their paralyzing fears and embrace true love before the filming ends, and their time together runs out?

----- Excerpt -----

Kayla would always remember that first golden glimpse of Alex Matthews, looking like a guilty little kid caught in the cookie jar, while his normally-sober partner roared with laughter.

A keen pang of disappointment lanced through her heart. Of course she hadn't really expected them to act just like their TV roles-yet somehow she had, anyway! Foolish of her.

She knew their screen characters intimately. She knew what they'd say, how they'd say it, how they'd react to any given situation. But these two glorious, larger-than-life people were total strangers to her. Suddenly she felt very shy, and more than a little awkward.

Alicia stepped forward first, and warmly clasped her hand. 'Welcome to paradise!' she smiled, instinctively liking what she saw in the younger woman's crystal-blue eyes. 'Or as we like to call it, The Madhouse.'

Her grip was strong, yet somehow compassionate. Kayla felt her tensed nerves relax slightly. 'It's a pleasure to meet you, Ms. Huntington,' she smiled, and meant every word.

Quinn MacAllister had brought her back to life. Alicia's character, Mariah Conners, had given her courage and strength through those first long months, when she'd been struggling to accept her grim new circumstances.

Alicia heard the sincerity in her voice, and remembered the rumors. Sometime soon, they'd have to cozy up for a nice long chat. But in the meantime...

'Allie, please,' she urged, waving aside propriety with an easy smile. 'A film set's no place for formality!'

You're the one she's here to see. Allie's cheerful voice echoed in Alex's ears as he drew a deep, steadying breath, and tried to still his racing pulse. Let's make her week a memorable one.

He was an actor. He could handle this. No one else needed to know how his heart was pounding.

He stepped forward with a beaming smile pasted on his face. 'It's a pleasure to finally meet you, Kayla Farrell. Welcome to Paradise Island!' And he forced himself to clasp her outstretched hand.

Heat exploded in his palm, and seared all the way up his arm and shoulder. Startled, he took a hasty step back.

Whatever he'd expected, her skin was vibrant and warm from the overhead noon sun.

He became aware of a fierce thudding in his belly-one that had nothing to do with her dreaded wheelchair, and everything to do with the heavy anvil gut-punching him.

Alicia's eyebrows rose slightly as hot color flooded Kayla's cheeks. So the sparks were already flying, how interesting! Sudden intriguing possibilities began to dance through her clever mind.

'Now you'll have to watch out for this one,' she teased, slyly canting her head in Alex's direction. 'Thinks he's too good for the likes of us, and he'll lead your poor heart on a merry chase if you give him a moment's notice.'

Kayla glanced up at her in surprise. An oblique warning? To guard herself, or to not poach on another woman's territory?

THREE YEARS LATER

No matter how hard she d worked, or how many times she d daydreamed about receiving that magical phone call, the thrilling reality still left Kayla stunned and speechless.

Fortunately her literary agent was quite used to incoherent stuttering, and merely chuckled.

Congratulations, Kayla. Her crisp New York accent sounded distorted through the aging speaker phone, and distinctly out of place in Kayla s sun-kissed screened patio. I wasn t quite sure how he d react, once I finally twisted his arm to read it. But he was very impressedâ¦and coming from Jeremiah McCormick, that s praise indeed!

He accepted my screenplay. It was all Kayla could stammer, in a dazed voice that made Susan laugh again. He accepted my screenplay!

He accepted your screenplay. Susan s smug reply blended amusement, satisfaction, and just a touch of reluctant admiration. A courier s on his way to you right now with the signed contracts. I ve already examined and approved them, but you ll still want your attorney to review them.

Now Kayla, don t you sign anything unless you re completely satisfied with the terms, she cautioned. I mean that. Nothing s carved in stone yet, and we can still negotiate on the fine points.

Most importantly, don t let him weasel you out of visiting the set. Her clipped voice became unexpectedly stern. Jerry s moody even by Hollywood standards, he hates having to tap outside talent, and he despises opening the set to anyone.

But that s just tough. Writers visit their movie sets all the time. So if that s what you want, you fight for it!

He wants this movie, Kayla. Now Susan s voice lowered confidentially. And he wants it bad. It s exactly what he needs to keep the series going for another season, and he knows it. So no matter how surly he gets, don t let him make you feel that you re requesting the impossible.

All right. Okay. She answered reflexively, because her mind was a whirling blank. I ll read it all over, from start to finish.

You do that. And fax me with the changes.

Do not-I repeat, do not-sign anything until we ve talked over every single detail! Are we clear?

Yeah. Yeah, we re clear. We re good. We re⦠Kayla sputtered into hazy silence. The room was spinning around her in crazy circles. Wow!

That didn t sound professional, and she d spent the last three years trying to polish her image. So she sternly pulled herself together. Thank you, Susan. Thank you!

Her agent laughed again. It s been my pleasure. And I don t say that often.

She couldn t remember what else they talked about before Susan hung up. It was all a blur.

Three long years of arguing, begging, and pleading with potential agents had just paid off. Never again would she have to spend another thankless hour abasing herself, or traveling to intimidating writer s conferences, just to persuade someone to give her a chance.

Jeremiah McCormick, owner and executive producer of The Bureau, had bought her screenplay! He was going to make a silver-screen motion picture, using the words and sweat and tears she d created!

My God. I finally did it! I finally did it! She whispered the words like a mantra as the incredible reality began to set in. I finally did it!

A wild laugh bubbled in her throat as she spun her wheelchair in a tight circle, then grabbed the phone again. The news was simply too spectacular to keep!

Brigit! Damn it, when would she remember that her best friend still worked the night shift? Sorry, I didn t mean to wake you. I m⦠No, I m fine! Really, Brigit, I am! I m better than fine!

Brigit, you won t believe⦠I just heard from Susan! Yes! Jerry McCormick accepted my screenplay! They re going to make a movie of Deadly Divergence!

Brigit s answering shriek was so loud that Kayla nearly dropped the phone. I ll be right there! Don t you dare move!

The line went dead. But Kayla didn t care. A brilliant smile lit her face as she spun around again, and threw her arms wide. We did it, Patrick! We did it! Somehow saying the words aloud made them seem more real. Susan s even making them let me visit the Fiji Islands, and watch the filming!

She fell back in her chair, breathless, and shook her head in wondering disbelief. I ll get to meet them, and see it all happening! We ve done it!

And we ll be there together, seeing it all come to life. Her voice softened, with love and poignant longing. Just like we always planned.

There was no answer to her jubilant outburst. To an outside observer, Kayla was alone on the cozy sunlit patio, gaily talking to herself. But the outside observer would have been wrong. She hadn t been alone even once since she d woken in that noisy hospital room, three full years ago.

Patrick s discarded body might be lovingly interred five miles away, beneath a sloping green hillside at beautiful Bayside Memorial Gardens. But his essence, his soul, was always with her. Sometimes she could almost see his familiar shadow stretched across the shiny wood floor, or feel his big hand brushing hers in a comforting caress.

He was her guardian angel. And she couldn t have survived or triumphed this way without him.

A car squealed into the driveway, and Kayla heard the car door slam. A fond grin curved her lips as she winked at the shimmer of sunlight cascading through her open window. That ll be Brigit, she predicted, speaking directly to the sunbeam. Any minute now, she ll be barging through the front door. Let s go greet her, shall we?

Tiny dust motes glittered in the warm summer air as she spun her wheelchair around, and glided into the spotless kitchen. An instant later, Brigit hurled the front door open, and dashed in. Unnoticed, the hazy sunbeam faded away behind a passing cloud.

It s really true? Brigit flung her arms wide, and enveloped Kayla in an exuberant hug. Oh darlin , I m so proud of you! So what did she say? Tell me everything!

Excitement made the musical lilt in her voice stronger. Her curly red hair was still sticking out in tufts, and her blouse was buttoned crookedly. Kayla leaned back and held her at arms length, burst into laughter, then pulled her close for a rib-cracking hug. Oh Brigit, what would I do without you to keep me sane?

Coffee. Energy sparkled in the younger woman s green eyes. We need coffee. Noâ¦champagne! Giggling, she spun around the room like a whirlwind, searching through Kayla s waist-high cabinets. We absolutely need champagne! Where s Monica?

Working out at the Y. She ll be back in an hour. Kayla maneuvered her wheelchair to the kitchen table, and laughed again. We ll all go celebrate tonight. Brigit, sit down before you hurt yourself! You re making me dizzy!

I m too excited to sit! Brigit eagerly clasped Kayla s hands. He signed the contracts! He really did?

Kayla took a deep breath, and nodded. Just envisioning stolid, dour Jeremiah McCormick with a pen in his big blunt-fingered hand made her heart race!

He really did! Susan s already reviewed them, and a courier s delivering them to me in a few hours.

I m under strict orders to read every single word, review it with my own lawyer, and stand firm on my request to go to Fiji. She chuckled as Susan s brisk, no-nonsense commands echoed in her ears. But once I sign on the dotted line, it s done!

Oh, darlin ! Weak-kneed, Brigit sank into the nearest chair. Her freckles stood out like a complex star map across her creamy nose and cheeks. Dear sweet Jesus, I can t believe it! Let me look at you!

As if, Kayla thought with another buoyant laugh, she d wasted away since yesterday s grueling physical therapy session. God knew, sometimes she felt like Monica s pitiless machines were going to kill her. But right now, she d never felt stronger in her life.

Wondering tears slid down Brigit s cheeks, and she dashed them away with an impatient hand. I can still hardly believe you re my poor helpless coma patient from Room B14! Look at you now, so bright-eyed and full of life! Nothing s ever gonna keep you down again!

Not even this custom-made wheelchair.

Kayla whirled in another tight circle, then carefully lifted her feet off the padded footrests. It s a day for miracles, Brigit. And I feel like throwing the dice, and seeing how far I can go! Help me into the body brace!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Brigit was right. She d come a long, long way from that sterile hospital room. And even though she d fought and struggled for every small triumph, sometimes even Kayla was amazed by how much her life had changed.

The months following her shocking recovery had been traumatic. It had taken several days before she could even sit up, and nearly two weeks before her stomach could tolerate solid food again. The nausea she d suffered during that period had been appalling!

Then she d had to learn to move again. First her hands, and then her arms. It was exhausting work, and she couldn t count the number of times that bone-deep fatigue had made her burst into tears, and wonder why she hadn t just died. She would rather have died than survive like this-crippled, alone, a pathetic charity case dependent...
