Orbital angular momentum (OAM) states of light and structured light beams have received considerable attention in recent years in the context of free space communication (classical and quantum) and defence systems. These applications inherently require long range beam propagation through atmospheric turbulence which leads to degradation of beam quality. As one moves from research demonstrations to system implementation, the rigorous modelling of propagation of beams having designer amplitude, phase and polarization profiles through realistic atmospheric turbulence conditions becomes a critical task.

This book covers fundamentals such as the spiral phase quadrature transform, angular spectrum method for diffraction, OAM states of light, and structured beams containing polarization singularities. This is followed by detailed discussion of the theory of wave propagation through atmospheric turbulence including Born and Rytov approximations, random phase screen generation with appropriate spectral models as well as sub-harmonic components and the split step propagation method. The book concludes with recent developments on robust beam engineering using polarization singular beams. Pieces of computer simulation codes for turbulence propagation modelling are provided with annotations in the Appendix. This is a stand-alone reference material and is well suited to graduate students and researchers in optics and photonics.
