Inge Sargent, geboren 1932 in Kärnten, lernt als Gaststudentin in Colorado den birmesischen Bergbauingenieur Sao Kya Seng kennen. Nach der Heirat 1953 zieht das Paar nach Birma, wo sich Sao Kya Seng als das Staatsoberhaupt von Hsipaw, dem nördlichen Shan-Staat, zu erkennen gibt. 1962, nach dem Militärputsch, wird Inge Sargents Mann verschleppt, und sie muss mit den beiden Töchtern das Land verlassen. Seit 1966 lebt sie in den USA, war viele Jahre Lehrerin und leitet ein Hilfsprojekt für birmesische Flüchtlinge. 2000 wurde ihr der Menschenrechtspreis der United Nations Association verliehen.
