Luigi Capuana (1839-1915) is a pivotal figure in Italian literature. Capuana, along with his better-known compatriot, Giovanni Verga, founded the Verismo movement, the Italian answer to the Realist movement sweeping European literature in the mid-nineteenth century. A prolific writer, Capuana published six novels and many more volumes of short stories, plays, essays and other works during his lifetime.
