Autor

Professor Muntzer Mughal, Consultant General and Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeon, Head of the Foregut Surgery Unit and Director of Surgical Oncology and Cleveland Clinic London. He has wide experience of oesophagogastric surgery with particular expertise in oesophageal reconstruction for complex conditions and complications of upper GI surgery. He has regularly assisted thoracic, bariatric, endocrine and paediatric surgeons for complex reconstructions and has developed techniques and algorithms for dealing with rare but serious, life-threatening conditions, such as tracheo-oesophageal fistula, aortoesophageal fistula and chronic oesophageal leaks.

Professor Mughal has been a consultant general surgeon for 35 years and has specialist expertise and wide experience in the treatment of upper GI and endocrine conditions. He is Honorary Consultant Surgeon at University College Hospitals London and Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and Honorary Associate Professor, UCL Developmental Biology & Cancer Department.

He has 25 years experience in the review, design and reconfiguration of clinical services in the National Health Service, and has successfully lead major reconfigurations in the North West of England and London. He has a major interest in improving cancer care at a system level and has led on streamlining cancer Multidisciplinary Teams for 10 years. He served as joint Chief Medical Officer of the North Central London Cancer Alliance between 2019 and 2020. He also works with national medical professional bodies including the Royal College of Surgeons of England, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence and the National Institute of Health Research. He has been providing medicolegal expertise in the areas of general and Upper GI surgery for 15 years.

Professor Mughal has also been involved in teaching, assessment and designing teaching programmes for 30 years. He has served on the examination panels of the Royal College of Surgeons of England and the Intercollegiate Specialty Board In General Surgery and has been an external examiner for higher degrees for several universities in the UK and abroad.
