Johann Josef Bökerarbeitete nach dem Studium der Kunstgeschichte, Archäologie und Geschichte in Köln, Saarbrücken, Münster und Oxford zunächst als Hochschulassistent an der Architekturfakultät der Universität Hannover, und anschließend als Professor für Architekturgeschichte an der McGill University, Montreal. Gegenwärtig leitet er das Institut für Baugeschichte der Universität Karlsruhe (TH) sowie das Südwestdeutsche Archiv für Architektur und Ingenieurswesen. Seine Publikationen befassen sich mit verschiedenen Aspekten insbesondere der mittelalterlichen Architekturgeschichte.
