The Chinese entrepreneur, mountaineer and poet Huang Nubo has an ambitious goal: he wants to visit all the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. On the first stage of his journey, in September 2013, he travelled the length and breadth of Germany, from Stralsund to the prehistoric lake-dwellings on Lake Constance. In his travel diary he records with unerring insight his impressions of stunning buildings, picturesque landscapes, new German friends and appallingly bad service. As well as observing culture, Huang Nubo always observes people, encountering them with curiosity and respect - as long as they do the same. Caught between indignation at the rudeness of customs officers and enchantment at the splendour of Aachen Cathedral, Mr Huang offers his own very personal view of the advantages and problems of German society, draws comparisons with his native China or falls to philosophising. His diary is an authentic document of an extraordinary journey through a country whose own world heritage seems almost as foreign as that of distant and mysterious China. In this project I have maintained my independence from start to finish: I am financing everything myself, enjoying myself in my own way, I am looking at Germany - and at the people I meet on my journey - through my own eyes. I have no wish to be a cultural ambassador or the symbol of a nation. I am only myself. I carry no nationalism in my baggage. I am a citizen of the world. I want to immerse myself in this world.mehr
