Erik Hinterding studierte Kunstgeschichte an der Universität Utrecht und promovierte über Rembrandt als Radierer. Er wirkte an zahlreichen Publikationen und Ausstellungen mit, unter anderem für die Fondation Custodia in Paris, die Scuderie del Quirinale in Rom, die Klassik Stiftung Weimar und das National Museum of Western Art in Tokio. Er ist einer der beiden Verfasser des New Hollstein Werkverzeichnisses der Radierungen Rembrandts aus dem Jahr 2013. Seit 2012 ist er Kurator im Amsterdamer Rijksmuseum, wo er die Sammlung frühneuzeitlicher Drucke betreut.
