This book is based on Tessa Müller s master s study titled Achievement Gap in the Highly Selective German School System: A Critical Analysis of Strategies for Equitable Education in a German Primary School (Müller, 2008). The purpose of this study was to explore and critically analyze possible ways to alleviate the existing inequities in the German school system, which are reflected in the achievement gap between immigrant and German mainstream students. Using a case study approach, the author analyzed the educational work of an award-winning German primary school with a culturally and linguistically diverse student population, situated in a socially disadvantaged district. The purpose was to gain insight into the school s practices and strategies for recognizing diverse students and for striving to provide equitable education for all students. This school demonstrates that a progressive Intercultural Pedagogy can provide a better education, especially for students with an immigration background, despite the structural inequities of the school system.mehr
