"I soon realized that we were going to be recruited to work for the GDR (East Germany) in West Germany. We could actually make a difference here, especially as US-Americans. It was clear to both of us that the Cold War was a war that had only one goal: to defeat socialism. We lived in the focal point between East and West. We were young and had the strength and energy to help secure peace."The gripping autobiography of Beatrice Altman-Schevitz and Jeffrey Schevitz, who spied for the GDR in West Germany: During the "Cold War", they wanted to play their part in preventing a hot war and at the same time strengthen socialism in East Germany. Exposed in 1994, they misled federal prosecutors and German courts with the legend that they had worked for the CIA. In her extraordinary life story the author describes how she - coming from a conservative Jewish family in Buffalo, New York - met the left-leaning sociology professor Jeffrey Schevitz. Instead of following their dreams and starting a new life in the GDR, they began a double life in West Germany, where they procured secret information, passing it on to the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ministry of State Security. As an "agent for peace", she stood up for ideals that she continues to hold to this day.mehr

Vorwort
When I see images from Gaza now, in 2024, I think back to the images of Berlin in May 1945. What I saw then and what I see now was what I tried to prevent in Europe in the 1980s.I urge you, the readers, to do now what I did then - to do everything in your power and under your circumstances to stop the genocide. To force Israel to find a way to live in peace with the Palestinians without dominating them. To force NATO to end its expansion to threaten Russia and its proxy war in Ukraine. To contribute to the peaceful resolution of current political and economic conflicts with a policy of détente and diplomacy, as we tried to achieve in the 1980s.Investigative journalists, whistleblowers and peace activists are important. We had a unique opportunity then to use our energy, commitment and skills to gather advance warning and anticipatory information.I urge you to consider how your energy and skills can best serve peace in this dangerous and treacherous time. We did this from 1977 to 1989 for East Germany and to this day in our open political work in the peace movement in united Germany.WHEREVER YOU ARE, STAND UP AND DO WHAT YOU CAN!Beatrice Altman-SchevitzJanuary 2024mehr
