Chopins vier Impromptus haben, typisch für diese von Franz Schubert kreierte Gattung, sehr stark improvisatorischen Charakter, sind jedoch stets voll spielerischer Eleganz und Leichtigkeit. Das gilt vor allem für die drei ersten Stücke dieses Bandes, Op. 29, 36 und 51. Während das erste wohl 1837 entstand, komponierte Chopin die zwei anderen während der Zeit seiner Beziehung mit der Schriftstellerin George Sand auf deren Landsitz Nohant, Op. 36 im Jahre 1839, Op. 51 drei Jahre später. Die Opuszahl des Fantaisie-Impromptu, op. 66, ist irreführend, denn das Stück war bereits 1834 als erstes der vier Werke entstanden. Chopin hatte es offensichtlich nicht für eine Drucklegung vorgesehen. Erst nach seinem Tod veranlasste sein Freund Julian Fontana eine Veröffentlichung. Der Druck weicht allerdings so stark von dem glücklicherweise noch erhaltenen Autograph ab, dass in der Henle-Urtextausgabe beide Versionen wiedergegeben wurden.Hardly unexpectedly for a genre created by Franz Schubert, Chopin's four Impromptus have a strongly improvisatory character, while still overflowing with fleet-footed lightness, as well as with dignity and tastefulness. The opus number of the Fantaisie Impromptu, op. 66, is misleading, since the piece had already been written in 1834 as the first of the four works. Chopin had apparently not envisioned its printing, and it was issued only after his death, thanks to the efforts of his friend Julian Fontana.
