KlappentextI have always believed in the power of geography. The same idea, executed in two differentplaces in the world will deliver completely different results. Moreover these geographicalplaces carry with them an added wealth of context. I admire artists who made works in exotic places. In the 90's I traveled and painted in a multitude of locations, in rented apartments, hotels and in glamorous studios offered by residency programs in half a dozen cities in Europe and Asia. One opportunity lead to another in a haphazard and unpredictable chain. In Sperlonga I painted in a windowless room in a Moorish tower, In Tokyo I painted on the bed in the tiniest hotel room in the world and in Berlin in a massive storage warehouse in the ex-east which had once been filled with coffee beans. The idea of the 'Itinerant' artist is an honored and historical practice which still has vitality today. 'Looking Back' is a book about the benefits of an itinerant life.
