Autor

Thomas Stearns Eliot, Amerikaner englischer Abstammung, geb. am 26. September 1888 in Saint Louis, Missouri/USA, verbrachte dort, calvinistisch erzogen, seine Kindheit und Jugend. Nach Studienjahren in Harvard, Paris, München und Oxford lebte er ab 1914 in London. 1917 veröffentlichte er seine frühen Gedichte. Von 1925 an war er Mitarbeiter im Verlag 'Faber und Faber'. Mit dem Erwerb der britischen Staatsbürgerschaft trat er 1927 zur anglikanischen Hochkirche über. 1948 erhielt Eliot den Nobelpreis für Literatur. Ausgehend von den literarischen Klassikern wie Vergil, Dante oder Shakespeare schuf er eine im Versmaß freie, abstrakte Lyrik und gab der englischen Sprache neue Impulse. Der Erneuerer der amerikanischen Lyrik und des religiösen Dramas starb am 4. Januar 1965 in London.
