THE SYMBOLISM OF THE PLANETS

Every planet has a sign or signs that it rules. These are also known as the planet s sign(s) of dignity. The natures of the planet/sign are complementary and work together harmoniously. The opposite sign(s) are the planet s sign of detriment, in which the natures of the planet/sign are in conflict and struggle to understand each other. Note that this does not necessarily mean a simple split between good and bad, as you will find when you read through the following interpretations, but rather that there exists some friction or potential for conflict. Every (personal) planet also has a sign in which it is said to be exalted, where it is arguably at its strongest placing. The sign opposite the sign of exaltation is the (personal) planet s sign of fall, its weakest placing, in which the natures of the planet/sign are mostly a mystery to each other.

Much astrological interpretation in terms of the natal chart (the horoscope) lies in assessing the combination of planets in signs. This works at many levels, but there are two major strands to planetary symbolism:

RETROGRADE MOTION

R is the glyph to denote retrograde motion. If you see the initials SR after a planet, this stands for Stationary Retrograde, meaning that the planet is switching on that very day from direct to retrograde motion. If you see the initials SD after a planet, this stands for Stationary Direct, meaning that the reverse is happening and that the planet is switching from retrograde to direct motion.

Astronomically, of course, planets do not literally stop and turn around but, in terms of our line of vision from the earth, there are periods when they appear to do so. Apart from the Sun and the Moon, all the planets spend periods of time in retrograde motion. The further away from the Sun, the longer the period of retrograde motion.

Astrologically, retrograde motion indicates that the symbolic message and purpose of the planet in question is in some way concealed, obscured, or delayed.

UNIVERSAL

What the planet stands for at a general level. For example, Mercury rules everything that comes under the umbrella of communication.

PARTICULAR

What the planet symbolizes in any given chart. For example, if you have Mercury in Aries, the nature of communication is fast, direct, and to the point. If you have Mercury in the opposite sign of Libra, the nature of communication is more discursive and seeks opinions.

Crucially, the particular also includes other people. The art of horoscopy really starts to open up when we ask not just what is this planet but who is this planet? So the horoscope does not just delineate personality characteristics but also the nature of our relationships and those who people our world.

The following cameos of the planets through the twelve signs are offered as takes, that is, illustrations as opposed to absolute givens, snapshots of symbolism as seen through my own client work or in the lives of prominent people. As with the Sun signs in the opening chapter, we are primarily considering the nature of the planet in a sign in isolation rather than within the context of any particular horoscope. Therefore, the characteristics may run very true to type, or they may be modified, for good or ill, depending on the planet s position within the chart and its relationship to the other planets. In these cameos you will come across mentions of the houses of the zodiac, degree-positions, and Ascendants; these finer details make up the next two, deeper, layers of the onion, and are unpeeled and explored at length in Chapters Three and Four.

MOON

Herbs and Foods

Lunar herbs and foods are cooling, drying, or sleep inducing. These include cucumber, coriander, moonwort, pumpkin, cabbage, lettuce, and watercress.

In traditional astrology, the Sun is Lord of the Day and the Moon is Lady of the Night, known together as the Luminaries or the Lights. The masculine Sun symbolizes our day world, the essential self, consciousness, and the life force, whereas the feminine Moon symbolizes our night world and the power of the unconscious. She also rules women, mothers and babies, our childhood, and fertility.

The Moon symbolizes our emotions, instincts, needs, and habitual responses, along with our home, as well as early family life. Often she will describe the mother s nature and character, and therefore the kind of mothering and emotional imprinting we received. If you want to understand the feeling nature, to find the little boy or girl within the man or woman, then the Moon is where to start.

MOON IN ARIES

As the first sign of the zodiac and ruled by the action planet Mars, being top is what Aries does best. This Moon symbolizes the pioneering nature, the need to lead-and excel. Both Bill Gates (b. October 28, 1955) of Microsoft and the late Steve Jobs (February 24, 1955-October 5, 2011) of Apple have this Moon in their sign, and their work has changed the face of technology forever. Supermodel Tyra Banks (b. December 4, 1973) moved beyond the catwalk and started her own production company, which went on to produce America s Next Top Model, The X Factor of the modeling world. Tyra acted as host, judge, and executive producer.

Aries rules the self, and psychologically this is a young and self -ish, me first Moon. Its problem-side is the child or teenage-ego state, which is preoccupied with its own needs. The self-esteem pendulum swings from an egotistical sense of personal entitlement to a deeply ingrained and powerful self-belief. When the balance is found and the Aries fire is channeled into true autonomy, the full power of this Moon s awesome single-mindedness comes into its own.

As with the Sun in Aries, many Aries Moon women go through their red phase, such as Piscean Rihanna (b. February 20, 1988). She constantly reinvents her image but arguably one of her most memorable looks remains that of her cascade of red curls.

IN A NUTSHELL efficient, impatient, assured.

MOON IN TAURUS EXALTATION

With the Moon s 28-day cycle and connection to women, conception, and nurturing, it makes symbolic sense to find that she is exalted in the fixed and fertile earth sign of Taurus. Here, all the lunar sensitivity and changeability is held, contained, and nourished. Individuals with this Moon often have strong family roots and a deep connection with one or both parents. As a result, they, in turn, tend to take to parenting in a natural and hands-on way. The emotional nature is generally contented and not given to drama. They have a great deal of perseverance and do not mind getting their hands dirty.

This is also Prince Charles Moon (b. November 14, 1948). He is known for his love of agriculture and for being a pioneer of organic farming. Furthermore, this is the perfect symbolic showing of the Moon s sign of exaltation in regards to women and family. His mother, the Queen (b. April 21, 1926), is a Taurus, and he will forever be linked to the exalted Diana, herself carrying the name of the Roman goddess of the Moon and birth. Charles and Diana s children, in turn, have powerful Moons-William (b. June 21, 1982) has the Moon dignified in Cancer (Cancer also being Diana s Sun sign) and Harry (b. September 15, 1984) has the Moon exalted in Taurus.

IN A NUTSHELL sensual, secure, down to earth.

TAURUS

MOON IN GEMINI

The Moon in Mercury s masculine sign bestows liveliness and quickness, often expressed by a childlike or impish quality, a sense of fun, and slapstick humor. Being big kids themselves, they have a natural understanding of children and how to enter into a child s world. Note the mobility to the features and a lack of self-consciousness that is part of playing the fool, mimicry, and an up for anything attitude. Goldie Hawn (b. November 21, 1945), Jim Carrey (b. January 17, 1962), and Rowan Atkinson (b. January 6, 1955) all have this Moon.

The link to language often shows through rapid speech, a penchant for writing or media work, or cleverness with words, such as master of wit Groucho Marx (October 2, 1890-August 19, 1977). Look, too, for the Gemini duality. Actress Gwyneth Paltrow (b. September 27, 1972) is bilingual, speaking fluent Spanish, and is raising her children to be bilingual. Dexterity is also a characteristic. Amongst my own Moon Gemini clients is a primary school teacher turned theatrical seamstress, a job at which she excels.

The duality may show in early upbringing, such as two homes or two sets of parents. This is also one of the archetypes of the womanizer or the person who leads a double life. Hollywood legend Spencer Tracy (April 5, 1900-June 10, 1967) remained officially married to Louise Treadwell, but his affair with Katharine Hepburn lasted 26 years. This Moon definitely needs stimulus and variety. Often, there is a wide and eclectic circle of friends and a...
