Zwischen der Reformation des 16. Jahrhunderts und der Entstehung der Pfingstkirchen im 20. Jahrhundert hat die methodistische Erweckungsbewegung seit dem 18. Jahrhundert die kirchliche Landschaft weltweit am Nachhaltigsten verändert. Vor allem die gelebte Frömmigkeit, die missionarischen und sozialdiakonischen Arbeitsformen des Methodismus haben Impulse für die anderen Kirchen der Reformation gebracht. Die methodistischen Kirchen sind bei all ihrer Vielfalt von Anfang an stets kräftige Motoren für die ökumenische Bewegung gewesen und geblieben.
