Dr. Zhao has been the pioneer and one of the leading lawyers who have developed the legal practice of customs and trade compliance (including export control) in the legal market of China. In 2012, he was awarded the "Client Choice - Top 20 Lawyers in China", a result of the first survey of this nature by ALB.
He is also recommended by Chambers Asia and Legal 500 as one of the top lawyers in trade compliance areas. Mr. Zhao is the chief editor of International Maritime Law, a popular textbook for law school students. He has contributed articles in Chinese, English, or German on customs, export control, and trade compliance issues to domestic and foreign publications or magazines, including the Yearbook of Global Ethics, Compliance & Integrity published in English by Deutscher Fachverlag-dfv, and the magazine Der Zoll-Profi (The Customs Professional) in German. Dr. Zhao co-authored the China chapter of the Guide to Sanctions, a book published by Global Investigations Review (GIR) in August 2020, edited each year thereafter. The China chapter introduced and analyzed the current export control scheme and the export control law of China.
