Chapter 11 - Archery Lessons

Arakira and Aranis returned to the castle just in time to attend their classes. This morning, the first lesson was archery. Therefore, they all went to the castle yard and from there to the shooting range. Originally, their mother had introduced them to archery about six years ago. Now, this skill was taught by one of her people, an Elonahim, who remained at the castle while Abraskor, the human king of this city, was on expedition. This teacher, Beltarien, was part of the city guard and therefore not on the king s exploration trips. The three new siblings Keremvor, Marcus, and Julichee had heard from Arakira and Aranis that children or youngsters had different lessons. It was a well-established fact that all would receive the same education and equal chances to develop themselves. All were given the standard lessons first and were then allowed to choose special subjects after the first year, which they found particularly interesting for themselves. So, everyone had the chance to refine their talents and preferences. Melanorien had found out several times in the past that humans could contribute particularly well to the common good if they enjoyed their work and were able to make full use of their talents. As ruler, she was implementing this way of thinking and succeeded step by step.

While the others had already started their warm-up shooting, Beltarien picked three bows for the newcomers. He first explained to them the rules they had to obey for everyone's safety. The most important one was that they were only allowed to shoot when he or a chosen deputy had released the targets, because then it would be guaranteed that no one would be in the firing range anymore, preventing bad accidents. This applied to everyone without exception, no matter how experienced the shooter was. Each one was allowed to fire three arrows at their target in their own pace and then had to wait until everyone was finished. Upon this, Beltarien would give a sign that they were now allowed to retrieve their arrows. More experienced shooters, who already took part in the quick-shot training, were also allowed to shoot more arrows, as long as someone was still not finished with their three shots. At the moment, he was showing the three newcomers how to string their bow. He also needed to help Julichee, because the boy did not yet have the necessary strength and coordination to accomplish this on his own.

"Now we'll identify your dominant eye." Beltarien said, blinking alternating with his eyes. This looked weird, because he also pulled one and then the other corner of his mouth upwards.

Julichee laughed and shouted, "You can rock your face!"

Beltarien looked at him with interest and said, in a friendly tone, "Let's start with you right away. Hold your left arm forward and make a circle with your thumb and index finger. Keep both eyes open and frame the center of the target in front. Now close your left eye. Is the center of the target still between your fingers?"

Julichee replied, Yes.

Well, then your right eye is your dominant eye. This must be brought as close as possible to the arrow when shooting. That means you will hold the bow in your left hand." Beltarien turned to Marcus and Keremvor.

"Now it's your turn. Follow your younger brother, stretch out your left arm, form a ring with your index finger and thumb, and look through the hole at the target. Now close your left eye and check if you can still see the middle of the target through the hole."

Keremvor saw the middle, while Marcus looked stunned, because with him closing the eye, the hole of his fingers had suddenly jumped off the target.

"Ah, Marcus. In your case, it looks like your left eye is the dominant one. So, you hold the bow with your right hand. But before you start shooting, you will get your arm and finger protection from me. Marcus, you need to pull the bracer on your right forearm, while you two need to put it on the left. I'll help you with the strings right away."

Julichee marveled at the thick leather and enjoyed its smell. Something in him was touched when he had that smell in his nose.

Beltarien observed Julichee briefly from the corner of his eye and couldn't suppress a smile. 'The little one has an awakened spirit,' he thought. 'He looks at the world more deeply than anyone else.'

"These bracers protect you in case you overstretch your bow arm. The bowstring will then slam on your forearm after letting go, instead of passing it." Beltarien held a bow in his left hand and bent that arm a little, while he indicated a short drawing motion with the other hand and then gestured along the path that the string would take. He overstretched his arm a tad and moved his other hand hard toward his forearm.

It was clear to everyone that this would cause pain.

"Now, I'll show you what this is causing on your arm." He took off his arm guard and showed them a blue, lightly reddish colored imprint of the bowstring on his forearm. The children looked at his arm in amazement and were a little frightened.

Marcus asked, "But why do you have this blue mark on your forearm?"

Then Julichee answered quietly and slightly inquiringly, "Because you want to show it to us " Beltarien s eyes locked with his, and he nodded. He did the same with Marcus and Keremvor. 'Hopefully, they won't forget that view for the long haul.'

Marcus was almost horrified. "You inflicted pain on yourself to teach us something? How do you know if we're worth it?"

"The fact that you re asking this question gives me hope." Beltarien said with a smile. Now, he turned to Keremvor and helped him tie the bracer after the two younger ones had finished.

"And where are you," he asked him without looking up from the bracer, "with your thoughts?"

Keremvor took a deep breath and looked a little depressed. "I don't know. I think of my mother. You know, I think, I saw her today. I miss her so much. The other two were too young to get to know her properly." He looked at his brothers, who now put on their finger guards and looked at Aranis and Arakira, who stood back-to-back, shooting one arrow after another in wonderful harmony. It looked like a synchronic dance. Keremvor followed their gaze and was also amazed at their graceful movements - something he couldn't see in himself.

"There's more." Beltarien ripped him out of his thoughts. "You know, we want to deal with the art of archery now, and for that you need a clear mind, so that you don't put yourself or others in danger or hurt yourself. Your mind is just not clear enough. It seems to be drowned in a fog."

Keremvor looked Beltarien deeply in the eye and saw no blame or negativity in it. Rather, he perceived worry and deep compassion, something he hadn't witnessed for so long. His father was overwhelmed for a long time with three children and the difficult life situation since their mother's death. Since then, he had only lived in a kind of survival mode. Keremvor marveled at his own thoughts. In truth, he himself was no different. He also survived instead of really living. That's why he envied his two younger brothers from time to time. They obviously had fun being alive unless he annoyed them. For the first time in his life, he expressed his own attitude in his thoughts towards his brothers and recognized many details of what he had done to them in the past.

Beltarien kept scrutinizing him, still waiting as Keremvor was caught within his own mind.

"I don't think I like myself that much," Keremvor summed up his own thoughts in response to Beltarien s question.

"What do you think you could change to feel better about yourself?" Beltarien asked him.

Keremvor looked down at his bare feet and shrugged. I don't think I can really change anything about myself. I've thought about myself many times, especially when one of the little ones cried because of me. I always wanted to get rid of that, which makes me feel so negative about Julichee and Marcus. But somehow it keeps breaking out of me."

"If you think about it as you do now, do you think it's also about your mother?" asked Beltarien, knowing well that he was touching a very sensitive subject, but exactly the one Keremvor had to pay attention to, because after all, he had led them to this thread of conversation.

"I don't want to talk about it!" It suddenly burst out of him. I don't want to have to think about it.

Beltarien looked at him and waited until the tension in Keremvor settled down a little. Then, he said, "But actually, you have the pictures at the forefront of your mind s eye all the time?"

"Yes," he answered hesitantly, looking a little embarrassed, with his head lowered. He glanced right to left to see if any of the other youngsters or his siblings were watching them. Luckily, everyone was far too busy shooting or watching for someone doing so, to pay attention to him and his conversation with Beltarien.

Then, it broke out of him, "I couldn't hold her! We were in the mountains, on our way to a city, to get food and shelter, through Father's work. Mother was heavily pregnant, but we had a crop failure and then the Great Flood swept away the rest of our farm." Keremvor sobbed and reordered his thoughts.

"Mother was heavily pregnant during this journey and gave birth to Julichee one night. We rested for three days on a mountain plateau, but then we had to move on, as our food supplies would not last long and we would have to starve a few days to reach the city. We were running over a mountain trail when Mother fell. She was right in front of me, and Julichee slipped out of...
